Add, duplicate, and delete elements

Elements are design assets you can use to bring your ideas to life. Find or create elements, add them to your design, and customise, duplicate, or delete them as you work.

What are elements in Canva?

Elements are pre-made design assets you can use to build or enhance your design. These include:

  • Graphics and icons
  • Photos and videos
  • Shapes, lines, and frames
  • Charts, stickers, and audio clips

Find elements in Canva

Search Canva’s content library or browse categories to find elements for your design.

  1. From the editor side panel, select
    Elements.
  2. Choose one of these options:
    • Search: Use the Search elements bar to find elements from the Canva library.
    • Browse: Under Browse categories, select a category. To view all available elements in a category, select See all.

Add elements to your design

Add an element, then reposition or resize it to fit your design.

  1. From the editor, select the element you want to add to your design.
  2. Drag the element to reposition it, or drag its resize handles to change its size.

You can also add content from other tabs, including Text, Uploads, Photos, Videos, and Apps.

Duplicate an element

Duplicating elements helps keep layouts consistent across your designs.

  1. Select the element you want to duplicate.
  2. To select multiple elements, hold Shift on your keyboard, and select to add other elements to the selection.
  3. Right-click, then select
    Duplicate.

You can also use these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Mac: Cmd+D
  • Windows: Ctrl+D

Delete elements in your design

You can always undo an accidental deletion by pressing Cmd + Z (Mac) or Ctrl + Z (Windows), or by selecting Undo.

  1. Select the element you want to delete.
  2. To select multiple elements, hold Shift on your keyboard and click to add other elements to the selection.
  3. On the floating toolbar that appears above or below the element, select
Delete. You can also press Backspace (Windows) or Delete (Mac) on your keyboard.

Upload your own elements to a design

You can upload your own graphics or files to use in your design.

  • Canva elements are assets from Canva’s content library.
  • Uploads are files or media you add yourself.
  1. From the editor, select
    Uploads.
  2. Select Upload files, then choose a file from your device.
  3. Select or drag an uploaded file into your design.

If you want to create custom visual content instead of using an existing element, use Canva AI or Magic Media.

Use Canva AI

  1. Open Canva AI using one of these options:
    • From the homepage, select
      Canva AI.
    • From the editor side panel, select
Canva AI. This option may not be available for some design types.
  2. Enter a prompt describing what you want to create. To use voice input, select the
    Microphone icon.
  3. Choose a content type, such as Image or Video clip.
  4. Select
Submit. To learn more about Canva AI, see Get started with Canva AI.

Use Magic Media

  1. From the editor side panel, select Magic Media. If you don’t see it, select Apps, then search for Magic Media.
  2. Under Images, Graphics, Videos, or 3D, describe what you want to create.
  3. Choose a style and layout if needed.
  4. Select Generate images.
  5. Select a generated image to add it to your design. To learn more about Magic Media, see Use Magic Media to create photos, graphics, and videos.

Search for more elements by the same artist

If you’d like to see more from an artist, check the details of any of their elements.

  1. From the
Elements, hover your mouse cursor over an element.
  2. Click on the
More icon that appears on the element thumbnail.
  3. Select View more by artist to load other elements from the same creator.

Using multiple elements from the same artist helps you keep a consistent visual style.

You can also embed different types of media. See Embed media on designs for more details.
